在明蓟辽长城重镇桃林口村，流传着一个宝藏传说，当年守城将士将十万军饷埋藏在此，可后来却无人找到，至今仍是个迷。这到底是怎么回事呢？这个传说到底是真还是假？事情还得从明朝末年说起。
这里，有必要先介绍一下明蓟辽长城重镇桃林口关。
据史料记载桃林口长城始建于北齐年间，到明万历年间重建。桃林口村曾发现过一块石碑，是当年桃林口关修建完成后卷刻的，上面明确记载了，桃林口关长城在明万历十八年开始修建，到万历二十八年修建完成，前后历时十年，可见当年工程之浩大。
九十年代末还见过这块石碑，但后来听说这块石碑被村里人卖掉了，很是可惜。按桃林口关修建的时间推断，此关修建的目的应主要是防止努而哈赤的后金兵的，因为万历二十八年是公元1600年，正是后金崛起的时候。
另外从桃林口的地理位置看，桃林口关位于山海关以西120公里处，青龙河绕关而过，向北直通塞外，这里位置非常险要，桃林口关向北是群山绵延的塞外，关口向西就是一望无垠的关内大平原，直通京畿；。因此这里就成了遏制努而哈赤入主中原的咽喉要地。
桃林口关是按水陆两重设防，关城分内城与外城，还有瓮城；城墙高度在10米左右。外城在明长城主线上，位于关城东路的青龙河边，有3000米长，分南北两个兵营，在与青龙河交汇处，设有水关（两侧各有一城楼，跨河架有一桥）；内城位于关城西部，分上城与下城。上城为主城，周长有1000米左右，在南、北、西各建有城门，南城门上刻有“巩汉门” 三个大字，意思是巩固汉人统治的天下，北城门上刻有“镇虏门”三个大字，意思是要镇压塞北的少数民族，西城门刻有“望京门”三字，因为桃林口关的西南方向正是京城方向，在上城内还设有东西两个衙门，一个文衙门，一个是武衙门；下城在关城南部，是南兵营将士居住的地方；另外桃林口关还建有众多庙宇，在下城靠近青龙河边建有“龙王庙”，在上城南门外建有“关老爷庙”，“佛爷庙”，在上城靠近北门路东建有“城隍庙”，北门外建有唯一保留至今的“白衣庵”，在外城北部的“关门”外，有一天然石洞，内建“佛爷洞”，里面供奉十八罗汉，有铜制的，有泥塑的。由此可见，当年的桃林口关，建设规模有多么庞大，气势有多恢弘。明政府在这里花费了大量的物力与人力，修筑雄关险镇，就是要挡住努而哈赤的军队，当年的守军大概也有三四千人。
公元1644年春，李自成率领的农民起义军一举攻破北京城，崇祯帝自缢煤山，大明王朝灭亡。之后李自成率领大军去山海关，攻打吴三桂。此时山海关长城一线的守军已是有家难回，有国难投。
在蓟辽长城重镇―桃林口关，守城的将士都沉浸在国破家亡的悲痛之中。但就在此前不久（大明尚未灭亡前），一批军饷已悄悄运抵城中，这批军饷以白银为主，还有少量黄金，是大明户部拨付的，大概有十万两，这是守城将士半年的开销。
如今大明朝已经灭亡，皇帝也已殉国，守城将士深受大明恩惠，惟有以死殉国，才能不负皇恩。因此全城将士都报着必死的决心，如果农民军前来攻城，必将绝一死战。根据当时的形式，守城将领考虑到敌我力量对比悬殊，想靠这三四千人与农民军交战，守住这座孤城，谈何容易，必定是凶多吉少，几乎没有获胜的希望。但这近十万两军饷怎么办，总不能白白地落入农民军之手。因此几位领头将领商定，先将这十万军饷埋藏,万一战事有转机，可以日后回来再取，以图大事，这样总比白白落入他人之手要好的多。因此这批军饷被分成三份，分别埋在桃林口关的三个不同地点。
此时，桃林口关城，已被农民军团团围住。原来，李自成也已听说桃林口关有十万军饷，就派近万人的军队攻打桃林口关。战斗在本应是与清兵战斗的战场上打响了，全城将士奋勇作战，激战进行了一天一夜，场面极为惨烈，大部分将士战死，城内百姓也死伤过半。农民军最终攻入城中。进入城内的农民军，急于寻找军饷下落，四处搜寻，他们抓来被俘士兵，严刑拷问，但都一无所获。
原因是，知道军饷埋藏地点的将领和士兵大都战死，其他士兵又不知宝藏地点。农民军没有找到宝藏，怎能善罢甘休，他们决定，掘地三尺也要找出宝藏，于是开始在城内四处挖掘。就在此时，李自成在山海关已被吴三桂与清兵所败，急忙调兵回撤。在桃林口的农民军也接到命令回撤。农民军最终还是没有找到宝藏，极不情愿地撤走了。后来清人编写的明史也提到了这段历史，说“城破、将殁、藏不知所终”。
满清后来入主中原，建立清朝。桃林口关战事已息，逐渐由当年守成将领的后裔建立了村落―桃林口村。经过三百多年岁月地生息繁衍，如今这里已发展成人口近两千的自然村。三百多年来，宝藏的传说一直在这里流传，许多人幕名前来探城寻宝，但都一无所获，也许他将成为一个千古之迷，继续等待后人去发现与探索。
